The above photograph is a juvenile Sharp-shinned Hawk, easily identified by the vertical stripes on its chest. When it matures, the breast will have horizontal red-orange bars. They are often confused with the common Cooper's Hawks, but Coopers are larger. Sharp-shinned Hawks are agile fliers that speed through dense woods to surprise their prey, typically songbirds.
