Madera Canyon at the northwestern face of the Santa Rita Mountains is twenty-five miles southeast of Tucson. As part of the Coronado National Forest, Madera Canyon has campsites, picnic areas, and miles of hiking trails. The canyon is a resting place for migrating birds, and it is known as a premier birdwatching area. I had spent many trips to Madera hoping to spot the elusive Elegant Trogon without success, but in 2019, I was successful in getting up-and personal with a handsome male. I was also lucky to photograph a very rare White Throated Thrush at Madera.
