The Berylline Hummingbird is a medium-sized Mexican species that, since the early 2000s, has become an uncommon but increasingly regular summer visitor—and even occasional breeder—in southeastern Arizona, chiefly around Patagonia, Madera Canyon and nearby riparian woodlands. Adults display bright metallic green upperparts, pale grayish underparts and a slightly decurved bill with a dark tip. They typically arrive in late spring (May) and remain through early fall (September), frequenting sycamore and cottonwoods as well as backyard feeders. First confirmed nesting in Arizona around 2019, the Berylline Hummingbird has quickly become one of the state’s most sought-after “new” species for birders.
