Lucifer Hummingbird, also known as the Lucifer Sheartail, is a slender desert hummingbird about 3.5–10" long, with a down-curved bill and a deeply forked tail. Males display an iridescent magenta gorget and green crown, while females are paler with buff underparts and a subtle crimson trim. In southeastern Arizona’s sky-island canyons and desert slopes—particularly where agave, ocotillo, sotol and cacti thrive—this rare migrant and occasional breeder feeds on nectar from desert blooms and gleans small insects for protein. Breeding in March through May, it often visits backyard feeders during spring migration and the best place to look for them is at Ash Canyon Bird Sanctuary, 5255 E. Spring Rd, Hereford.
