Rivoli’s Hummingbird, formerly known as Magnificent Hummingbird, is the second-largest hummingbird in North America, measuring 4.3–5.5 inches and weighing about 7–8 grams. In Arizona, it is a summer resident of the Sky Island mountain ranges—especially pine–oak forests and canyons in southeastern Arizona—where it visits feeders and flowering plants at elevations between 4,000 and 9,000 feet. Adult males display dark green upperparts, a purple crown, and an iridescent turquoise throat patch, while females are duller with grayish underparts and a distinctive white eye spot; both feed on nectar and small insects. Although most individuals depart Arizona after breeding, some linger at backyard feeders into the winter.
